How do I create a family?
Open Couch and tap Account → Create a family. You'll get a 6-character family code. Share it with the people who should join — they tap Join family on their own Couch and paste the code.
One person creates; everyone else joins. Couch families are designed for households (a few people you trust), not public groups.
Can I be in more than one family?
Yes. Account → Family → Switch to manage multiple families on the same Couch account. Use one for your household, another for the film club, another for the long-distance partner.
Someone joined my family who shouldn't have. How do I remove them?
Open Account → Family → tap the member's name → Remove from family. Their votes/RSVPs stay in the family's history (other people relied on them) but their name is no longer associated. They lose access immediately.
If you want to prevent further joins, regenerate the family code: Account → Family → New code. The old code stops working immediately.
I'm not getting push notifications.
Three things to check:
- System permission. iOS: Settings → Couch → Notifications → make sure they're allowed. Android: Settings → Apps → Couch → Notifications.
- Couch's per-event toggles. Account → Notifications. Each event type (watchparty starting, intent match, etc.) has its own toggle.
- Browser permission for the PWA. If you installed Couch from the website, push notifications need browser permission too. Reload the app, look for a permission prompt at the top, or open Settings → Notifications and re-enable.
If all three are on and notifications still don't arrive, email support with your device + OS version.
Why isn't a movie I added showing up in the matches list?
The matches list filters by what the people on tonight's couch can actually agree on. Common reasons a title is hidden:
- Someone vetoed it.
- Kid Mode is on and the title's age tier is above the cap.
- Mood filter is on and the title doesn't match.
- The title isn't on any streaming service the people on the couch subscribe to.
- Runtime is longer than the time the couch has tonight.
Tap the title in your queue to see why it's filtered out — Couch surfaces the reason directly.
Can I pick something to watch alone?
Yes. The "Duo" / "Family" / "Crew" labels are guides, not enforcement. Solo Couch works fine — votes from a single person are valid; spin still rotates fairly across your queue. The ritual just collapses to "what do I want to watch?", which is sometimes the harder question.
How do I delete my account?
Account → Delete account. It's self-serve and immediate. Your account is marked deleted, your name is removed from family rosters, and a scheduled job permanently erases your personal data within 30 days. Family data you helped create (votes, watchparty reactions, etc.) stays in the family's history because other members rely on it — but it's no longer tied to your name.
If you change your mind within the first few minutes, sign back in — the deletion can be reversed before the scheduled job runs. After that, recovery isn't possible.
How do I disconnect Trakt?
Account → Sync → Disconnect Trakt. We delete the OAuth token immediately. Your Trakt account is unaffected (manage that on trakt.tv).
What does "Wait Up" do?
Wait Up delays the reactions and live updates that other people on the watchparty are sending, so spoilers stay sealed for whoever's behind. Tap the Wait Up chip during a watchparty and pick how far back you are (e.g., 15 minutes). Reactions arrive on your screen shifted by that delay — you see them when you reach the moment they're about, not before.
Why did the spin pick something I voted "no" on?
It shouldn't. Spin only picks from titles that received at least one yes-vote among the people on the couch. If you voted "no" but the title still got picked, someone else on the couch voted "yes" — and one yes is enough for a title to be eligible (the "any-yes" rule for duos and the family-majority rule for larger groups).
If you genuinely don't want to watch the pick, tap Veto. The wheel goes again with the vetoed title removed from the pool.
Couch Tonight (the iOS / Android app) vs. couchtonight.app (the website) — what's the difference?
Same product, three surfaces:
- couchtonight.app — works in any browser. Add to your home screen for an installable PWA experience.
- iOS app (Couch Tonight) — App Store. Same experience, native push notifications, native sign-in.
- Android app (Couch Tonight) — Google Play. Same experience, deeper Android integration.
Your account, family, and queue sync across all three. Sign in once on each surface.
I'm being asked to pay. Couch is supposed to be free.
It is. Couch has no subscriptions, no in-app purchases, and no ads. If anything inside Couch is asking for payment, you may be looking at a phishing page or a fake clone — do not enter payment info. Email security@couchtonight.app with a screenshot and we'll investigate immediately.
Status & outages
If Couch isn't loading or you're seeing errors, the issue may be on our end or with one of the services we depend on (Firebase, TMDB). Check our deployment status — currently deploys are tagged in the service worker as couch-v48-manifest-extract (visible at /sw.js).
If we're aware of an outage, we'll post it at support@couchtonight.app auto-reply. (A dedicated status page is on the roadmap.)
